Performance Appraisal System
To perform at their best, employees need to understand what success looks like and how their work contributes to the wider business. A performance appraisal system provides that clarity, while also helping to ensure compliance with UK employment law.
At Goodwille, we work alongside overseas employers to design a performance management approach that fits their business, their people, and their plans for growth in the UK.
What Is a Performance Appraisal System?
A performance appraisal system is a structured way of checking in on employee performance.
It involves scheduled meetings between managers and employees, where performance is measured against agreed objectives and KPIs. Managers and employees review progress, talk through what’s been achieved, and address any concerns with clear feedback.
Why Performance Appraisals Matter for Employers
Performance appraisals are important because they ensure everyone is working towards the same goals while also giving employees the support they need to perform well in their role and grow over time.
In addition to this, performance appraisals also affect:
Compliance
Appraisals are necessary for handling performance issues in compliance with UK employment law. If an employee’s performance doesn’t meet expectations, you need clear records showing what has been discussed and what steps have been taken to support improvement.
They also support employee development, as they make it easier to identify where training or additional resources are needed for someone to do their job effectively. This is important for compliance, as employers are legally required to provide employees with the “adequate resources” (such as training) to perform their role.
Employee Advancement
Employee Advancement
Performance appraisals give you a structured way to notice and record when an employee is consistently meeting targets and improving in their role. This makes it easier to decide when someone is ready to move forward – for example, from probation into a permanent role, into a promotion, or into a role with more responsibility.
Types of Performance Appraisal Methods
There are several different ways to evaluate employee performance, and many businesses use a mix of methods rather than relying on just one. For example, an employee might complete a self-assessment first, followed by a performance review with a manager.
Traditional Performance Reviews

This is the most common approach, where a manager meets with an employee to review performance (usually once a year). It focuses on goals, achievements, and constructive feedback.
Peer Review

In a peer review, colleagues provide feedback on each other’s performance. This helps build a fuller picture of how someone works within a team and can highlight strengths or challenges that managers may not always see directly.
Self-Assessment

Self-assessment asks employees to reflect on their own performance before the review meeting. This encourages ownership and honest discussion about achievements and areas they want to improve.
360-Degree Feedback

360-degree feedback collects input from multiple sources, including managers, peers, and sometimes direct reports. This creates a more rounded view of performance.
Management by Objectives (MBO)

Management by Objectives focuses on setting clear, measurable goals at the start of a review period and then assessing performance based on whether those goals have been achieved. It helps ensure performance appraisals serve a clear purpose and are tied directly to business outcomes.
Government Scheme (NEST)
NEST is the workplace pension set up by the government to ensure that every UK eligible employee has access to a pension scheme.
As an employer, you’re required to pay at least 3% of an employee’s pensionable earnings, but you can choose to contribute more if you wish. Higher employer contributions can make your benefits package more attractive, helping you recruit and retain employees.

Workplace Pension Advice for Employers
Getting your workplace pension right can make a real difference to how easy it is to hire and keep the right people, especially for small employers competing for talent.
We help you understand what’s realistic and competitive for your industry through benchmarking, so you’re not overpaying – or under offering. This helps you make confident decisions about your pension offering.
Pension Compliance Support
Many companies expanding into the UK worry about their compliance. Our people hold leading UK qualifications – including ACA, CIMA, CIPD and ICSA – and we’re authorised to act as a Company Service Provider with HMRC. That means you’ll be working with experienced professionals who can give you confidence that everything is being handled correctly.
Re-Enrolment
Re-enrolment is when you put eligible employees who previously opted out back into your pension scheme. As an employer, you’re legally required to automatically enrol any opted-out employee every 3 years, as long as they still meet the eligibility criteria.

Workplace Pension Schemes FAQ’s
What does “qualifying earnings” refer to?
Qualifying earnings are the portion of an employee’s pay used to calculate pension contributions. This currently includes earnings between £6,240 and £50,270 a year (these figures are reviewed annually by the government).
For example:
If someone earns £40,000 a year:
£40,000 minus £6,240 = £33,760
Their pension contributions are calculated from £33,760.
Some employers use a different basis, so it’s important to know how your scheme works.
What does “automatic enrolment” mean?
Automatic enrolment is the UK system that requires employers to put eligible employees into a workplace pension scheme. Employees are enrolled without needing to ask, and both the employer and employee make contributions.
As part of your auto enrolment duties, you must assess your staff, enrol those who qualify, and keep the pension scheme running correctly.
How does choosing a workplace pension provider work?
When choosing a pension provider, you’ll need to check whether the scheme will accept all your employees, how much it will cost, how it applies tax relief for staff, and whether it integrates properly with your payroll system.
We can help guide you through this decision in collaboration with our benefits advisory arm, helping you to compare options and choose a pension provider that fits your business and employees.
